“In the days of couture, when people didn’t wear couture-designed clothes, I would sew the dresses myself, in my mom’s basement.
I was making them by hand, and I wanted to show how beautiful couture can be.”—Shane Stierz, fashion designerShane and his wife Shari were looking for a way to dress their son, Ryan, a sophomore at Washington University.
So they started sketching, and he started to draw what they envisioned as a dress.
“I started to get really creative with the designs and colors,” Shane says.
“I was really inspired by the artistry of the original dresses.”
After graduating from Wusthof, Shane went on to work at the fashion house of New York’s Balmain.
He then got a job at a design agency, where he worked on many of their designs.
“It was a dream job,” he says.
But the design agency also required that they wear couturier uniforms that were a combination of couturiers’ signature blue uniforms and the more casual uniforms worn by other designers.
“We had to wear suits,” he recalls.
“And I think that’s the beauty of the dress.
You can mix it up and make it something different.
And I think people really appreciate it when you do that.”
So, they went to the designer of the couture uniforms and asked for advice.
“They said, ‘We’re all going to do the same thing.
We’re going to wear the same uniforms,’ ” Shane recalls.
The designers had a few suggestions, and Shane says they came up with a few other ideas for the dresses.
“So I got back in the office and sketched something, and that’s how we ended up with this dress.
I did the entire process myself.”
A new way to make a dress from scratchThe dress is inspired by a couple of items from the couturé collection.
One is a red velvet silk silk dress that the couturer’s collection used to wear.
The other is a silk velvet silk dress from the designer’s collection, which Shane and Shari wanted to make their own.
They decided to do it using a “beads technique,” in which the dress is made from silk, beads, and fabric.
The idea was to combine the silk and fabric to create the fabric.
“There’s a lot of different types of beads, silk, and fabrics in the coutures collection,” Shane explains.
“You can do some really fancy things with the fabrics, and we wanted to use that to our advantage.”
The process is called beadwork, and it’s a technique that’s been around for decades.
“Beadwork is an art form that has been in fashion for a very long time,” says Rachel Gorman, a professor of textile arts and crafts at the University of Pennsylvania.
“In other words, it was one of the first things people learned about weaving, making things, and making jewelry.”
When you look at the coutury collection, it’s pretty well-known for its designs.
But Shane says he didn’t think that his own work would be so popular.
“When you’re designing couture dresses, you’re doing the same kind of thing over and over again,” he explains.
The couture collections have been around since the 1880s, and since then, many designers have tried their hand at creating the dresses, including couturists such as Vivienne Westwood, who worked on the designs for the couturs at Versace.
In his own collection, Shane says that the most difficult part of creating a couture dress is getting the right material to make the fabric look right.
“Sometimes the fabrics are really rough, and sometimes they’re just really nice,” he notes.
“But I just want the dress to look good.”
After all, you don’t want a dress that looks like a teddy bear or a giant bag.
“When you design a couturiere dress, you want it to have a little bit of everything,” Shane continues.
“The fabric, the beads, the lace, the bows, the belts, and so on.
It’s not about the perfect fabric, but the perfect shape.”

If you want to make your own, Shane recommends making the dress in a variety of colors.
“For example, you can go with a lot more bright colors, or you can keep the light muted,” he tells us.
If the colors aren’t your thing, he recommends making a simple print of the fabric, then making the silk.
“If you don, you end up with some pretty messy, ugly prints.”
Shane is proud of his new dress.
“As a kid, I wanted my dad to be in the room,” he laughs.
“He said, You have to get into it.”
